One Big Screen Hire Newcastle: Projector, Fast-Fold or LED?
A room full of people all looking at a laptop is not a presentation. One big screen fixes that. Everyone sees the slides, the photos, the lyrics or the live camera, including the back row.
Sonic Sound & Lighting hires big-screen packages across Newcastle, Maitland, the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and surrounding areas. That can be a projector with a tripod screen, a fast-fold screen, or an LED wall for indoor or outdoor use. We also sell and install LED screens for venues that need one in place every week.
The right choice depends on the room, the light, and how far people are sitting. Bigger is not always better. Readable is.
When one screen is enough
Most events do not need a video wall on every wall. They need one image that the whole audience can read.
That is the brief for a conference, AGM, school presentation, wedding photo reel, church service, council meeting or community event. A single screen at the front, sized to the room, with a feed that is already tested before doors open.
If the audience is split across two rooms, or the event is outside in full sun, the answer changes. That is where a second screen, or an LED wall, earns its place.
Projector and tripod screen
A projector and a tripod screen is the straightforward hire for a meeting room, classroom, small hall or function space that can be dimmed.
The screen stands on its own legs. No rigging, no truss, quick to put up. Pair it with a bright enough projector and a simple playback source, and you have slides, video and a laptop feed without building a stage.
This is the option we recommend when:
- The room can be darkened, or at least the screen wall is out of direct sun
- The audience is close enough to read a projected image
- You want a clean, low-profile setup for a ceremony, briefing or seminar
- Budget matters more than daylight brightness
It is not the option for a midday market, an outdoor wedding in full sun, or a large hall with the lights up. Projection loses that fight.
Fast-fold screens
A fast-fold screen is the step up when the tripod frame is too small or too light for the room.
The frame folds out, the surface stretches on, and you get a larger, flatter image than a pull-up tripod screen. It still works with a projector, so it suits halls, school presentations, conferences and indoor ceremonies where you want a proper screen without going to LED.
Fast-fold is the better hire when:
- The audience is wider and the tripod screen would look lost
- You want a stable frame that presents well in photos
- The event is indoors and the room light can be controlled
- You need a screen that packs down for transport but still looks like a production, not a meeting-room extra
Front projection is the usual setup. If people have to walk in front of the screen, tell us. Rear projection needs space behind the surface and a different throw.
LED screens, indoor and outdoor
LED is the screen that does not care about the room lights. The image is emitted, not projected, so it stays readable with the houselights up, on a stage, or outside in the day.
Indoor LED suits conferences, churches, school halls and weddings where people need to read names, slides or lyrics, and you do not want to kill the room lighting to make a projector work. Finer pitch for closer viewing. We size it to how far the front row sits, not to the biggest panel we own.
Outdoor LED suits festivals, sports days, markets, outdoor weddings and community events. Higher brightness, weather-rated cabinets, and a structure that holds in Hunter wind. A projector on a tripod will not do this job at noon.
LED hire can be the wall only, or the wall with processor, playback, stands or truss, cabling, and a crew. It also pairs cleanly with our PA, wireless mics, lighting and trailer stages, so one quote covers the show.
If the screen will be used most weeks, buying is often the better spend. We design, supply and install permanent LED for churches, clubs, schools and function rooms. Hire a few times a year, buy if it is part of the venue.
Which one should you book?
| Situation | What we usually hire |
|---|---|
| Small room, lights can be dimmed | Projector and tripod screen |
| Hall or conference, larger audience, indoor | Projector and fast-fold screen |
| Lights stay up, or people must read fine text | Indoor LED |
| Daytime outdoor event | Outdoor LED |
| Wedding, church or school that needs both sound and a screen | Screen plus PA, booked together |
Send the venue, the date, indoor or outdoor, and what is going on the screen. A photo of the room helps. We would rather talk you out of an LED wall you do not need than hire you a projector that washes out at 11am.
What to send us before the day
- The file or laptop you are playing from, tested on the day before if you can
- Aspect ratio. Most event screens are 16:9. A phone video shot vertical will have black bars
- Whether you need a clicker, HDMI from a lectern laptop, or a simple USB playback
- A live camera feed, if guests at the back need to see the stage
We check the image before guests arrive when setup is part of the hire. Equipment-only hire is available if your own team is running it.
